Christmas lights are not the only thing that will be sparkling this festive season. While glitter has always been a mainstay in beauty, regardless of season, 2019’s F/W makeup trend takes it up a notch with the trending look affectionately dubbed “fairy dust”.
Reminiscent of our childhood storybooks and dress-up games, the originally look from the runways calls for a smattering of finely faceted glitter particles, so delicate that they look almost magical. Rather than thicker pearl pigments as often seen in shimmer shadows, ideally the look should be constructed from the finest glitter you can locate, tastefully smudged near the crease of the eyelid. Of course, as with any beauty look, it can be customised to your own tastes, from artfully minimalistic to glamourous maximalist.
The term “fairy dust” was coined by Brooklyn-based makeup artist extraordinaire cum Estée Lauder global beauty director, Violette, is meant to describe a soft ethereal shimmer around the eyes. She advises layering a glittery lip gloss sparingly over your usual matte eyeshadow to give it the right hint of reflectiveness and glossiness. She also advises the use of a glitter shadow to line the bottom waterline, wiping up any loose fallout with a sponge. Glitter has a tendency to get messy and adhere to any surface, so it is best to do your eye makeup first, so that your base does not have to be redone. A fan brush can also be a handy tool, used to flick away excess glitter. A great glitter gloss that can be used here is NARS Multi-use Gloss, a lightweight and creamy formula that can be applied on the face or lips for an all-over shimmery impact.

We recommend the Fenty Beauty Fairy Bomb Shimmer Powder, a superfine all over highlighting
powder to get a delicate and subtle sparkle. Each glitter is multi-faceted to catch light with every movement and direction. It can also be repurposed as body glitter. For another glittery option, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Loose Glitter can be set to work. Its metallic glitter is not only non-irritating but also ultra-reflective. Seeing as it is a loose glitter however, it is best paired with an adhesive base. In a pinch, vaseline will do the trick. Simply dab a small bullet brush into the adhesive followed by a dip in the loose glitter and apply it in tapping staccato on the waterline for a dreamy effect. A cool trick for the extra fairy-like touch is the use of a red-hued light brown pencil gel liner to tightline the lower lashline, giving the eyes a teary effect.

For those that want a little more ease with application, instead of a loose glitter, a pressed or cream
eyeshadow will do the trick. Hourglass makes a great one with light reflecting pearls that capture
and reflect light for high impact sparkles. It is also easily buildable due to its cream texture, from a sheer, crystal-like finish to a more opaque one.

Want to capture the glossy, dewy look as recommended by Violette but are afraid of applying gloss to the lids? Instead of a potentially sticky lip gloss, go for Farsali’s Jelly Beam in Gold, a jelly-like shimmer paste that can also be used as a highlighter across the cheekbones. It is known for being highly natural-looking as well, for a little more subtlety. Another holy grail item is Stila’s Glitter and Glow Liquid Eyeshadow. You might have heard of its iconic peachy-champange shade, Kitten, but the rest of the collection is equally as mesmerising. The liquid eyeshadow dries smoothly after application, allowing for minimal fallout.

We do not want to end up like Cinderella with all the magic gone at the strike of midnight, so be prepared with some primer. MAC’s Prep + Prime Fix + Shimmer Setting Spray is your fairy godmother. For an all over shine, simply spray it over th
e face. To set only the eye glitter, spray some onto your eyebrush before dipping it into the glitter eyeshadow or loose pigments to fix it to the lid. It contains pearlescent particles as well so do not be worried about dimming your shine.

My mother used to call ma a magpie, with the way I hoarded everything with the remote hint of sparkle. For all you fellow beauty magpies out there, this season is our time to shine.
